Do you struggle with balancing your priorities?
When I first started my coaching business, I was clear about my core values: career fulfillment and meaningful connections with friends and family. I knew that honoring these values was crucial to living a fulfilling life. For a while, I had to prioritize my efforts on transitioning my career. The good news was that my relationships were in a good place. Given the demands of my day job in advertising, I dedicated weekends and spare moments to learning coaching and building my business from the ground up.
Prioritizing my Values
Prioritizing my values meant carving out time in my schedule for both career advancement and quality time with loved ones. Weekends were often spent immersing myself in coaching classes and assignments, with social activites scheduled for later. This balance allowed me to pursue my passion while nurturing my relationships—a delicate harmony I worked to maintain.
Then came an invitation that would challenge my carefully crafted routine: a St. Patrick’s Day Celebration in Chicago—a city known for its festivities. If you’ve ever been here for that kind of celebration, you know that it’s so much fun, takes a lot of energy, and starts pretty early in the day. It was an opportunity to connect with friends and have some fun. But it also meant diverting from my usual schedule of weekend work sessions.
Finding Balance
In that moment, faced with the choice between sticking to my routine and embracing spontaneity, I made a conscious decision to adapt. I recognized the importance of flexibility in honoring my values. So, for this day, I reshuffled my priorities, allowing myself to fully participate in the St. Patrick’s Day festivities without guilt.
In this moment, I knew that I wanted to feel connected to friends and see them on this fun day. SO, I adjusted my schedule to spend the day together wearing my green. And, I’d focus on coaching the next day on Sunday.
Have It All
While knowing your values and prioritizing them is key, it’s also good to know when you need to adjust and be adaptable. Knowing you could adjust allows you to enjoy each moment of your life versus gripping tightlty to how it needs to look. Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day became more than just a fun-filled day; it was a simple but powerful lesson in balance, flexibility, and the art of living a fulfilling life aligned with our core values. Now, I have a career I love with a solid group of friends by my side.
