Do I need a therapist or a coach?
You work hard to keep your body strong, your meals healthy, your career on point. But who takes care of what’s going on in your head and heart?
Your mental health is a pillar for success and happiness in your life and career.
On #WorldMentalHealthDay let’s normalize discussing mental health and the importance of developing daily habits that support your mental well being.
As a psychology major and now certified coach, I’ve made it my mission to support others in understanding their mental and emotional health so they can thrive in their lives.
How can I experience well-being?
There are many ways we can experience well-being and the most popular question I get asked is what is the difference between a therapist and a coach?
The simple answer is that a therapist (psychologist, counselor, or any licensed professional) helps you heal old wounds usually from childhood. A coach can help you optimize your life by meeting you where you are now and helping you find ways to move forward.
Of course, the answer to this question is more complex. Oftentimes, coaches can help with healing wounds by the nature of what you explore. I’ve studied positive psychology, neuroscience, and spirituality; knowledge I use to support my clients in resolving and releasing old patterns and creating lives they love. And, I have clients who see both a therapist and me so they have a powerful team to guide them on their health journey.
Ask these questions to decide if I need a therapist or coach…
There are other questions to consider when working toward improving your well-being [or looking for solutions].
- Do I feel a connection with this therapist or coach? Interview a few to decide.
- What are their credentials? See if they align with your needs.
- What do I really need? Get clear on your outcomes to find the best fit.
- Could I use both a therapist and coach? Be open to relying on a team of people.
Why high-achievers like coaching…
My experience has been varied. At the end of the day, everyone’s journey is unique. I’ve had many clients mention that coaching has helped them more than therapy. That can be for different reasons:
- Therapy established the groundwork to help with moving forward.
- I’ve built a strong level of trust with them so they feel comfortable opening up.
- They’re ready to hear the message they need.
- They’re high achievers so it feels good to work with a bit more structure.
Ultimately, I connect the dots for my clients in a way that goes beyond reading books, listening to a podcast or one particular modality can provide. I get to know the whole person. And together, we create a powerful partnership where results happen in a way that feels magical. #lifecoach #careercoach #getcentered #staygrounded
