Ready to experience results while feeling happier along the way?
Something terrible happened at my “Thriving without Burnout” retreat this weekend. It was an epic fail.
And, people found out I was human. Now, they know I’m not perfect.
Best part…I didn’t care! And, that’s not like me.
But, let’s be honest, they knew I wasn’t perfect. No one is…but I wanted to create such a special experience for my retreat guests. I spent time dropping into my body before the retreat began so I could connect with everyone as they showed up on our Zoom call.
I kicked off the retreat with welcoming and enthusiastic energy. We began introductions and then I had tech issues for 20 minutes! I missed 20 minutes of MY retreat. Thank goodness the amazing group just continued on with introductions.
The good news was I remained calm while I was away. Because I did, I went into solution mode finding a way to get reconnected and contacting my VA to send the slides to another participant and we continued on with the retreat.

The old me would have been upset. And I wonder if you can relate to this side that needs to be perfect. Or that side that criticizes you if you make a mistake or mess up.
You learned from a young age that your value comes from “doing” and being responsible–getting good grades, keeping your room clean, getting a good job, being married, and having kids. You actually followed through on so many of those principles and continue to set and achieve goals—MAYBE you’re the partner of your law firm, in or approaching the c-suite, a doctor, in financial services.
So, you continue to think that your value comes from these accomplishments and your success. And yes, that is all great and impressive. But, what also matters is that you start directing your perfectionism in the areas that matter most. I’m so grateful that I didn’t let this hiccup take over my mind or build doubt. I was able to keep going and we had a great 3 day retreat.

So, the best part of this situation was noticing how I’ve finally moved from being a “perfectionist” to what I jokingly called a “recovering perfectionist” to a “healthy striving perfectionist.” Yes, perfectionism or I like to say excellence and focus on what matters most is ok. In fact, it’s probably helped you to be successful.
My focus remained on creating a good experience for my guests. And, I’m grateful that as always–I have amazing guests so we’re able to have a safe, smart, and supportive space for each other.
