Setting & Achieving Goals – The Old Way
I’ve been a goal setter my whole life. I haven’t always executed it in the most efficient and effective manner, but I’ve learned a lot over the last few decades on how to do so.
One of the biggest learnings has been to identify yourself with that next level you’re striving to achieve in your life. So often, we’re anchored in our current role or level in life that we are missing an opportunity to get to the next level that might be right under our nose. This anchoring might just be out of habit.
This recently happened to me when I was going for my ACC certification with the ICF – – Associate Coach Certification with the International Coach Federation. Every 3 years, I renew my coaching certification with this world-wide governing body for coaching. I love taking classes as part of the certification program and deepening my coaching skills. This year, I was about to submit my course work for the last 3 years to gain approval to “re-new” my certification when a colleague asked why I didn’t go for the next level of certification.
One Simple Change to Get Results
I was so used to thinking about how to get the ACC level, I didn’t even think about the next level. My colleague reminded me that I probably had more than enough coaching hours and experience. That meant that all I had to take a 3 hour exam to get to the final step toward being a PCC – – Professional Certified Coach.
So, off I went to make it happen! I couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought about this path sooner. But, I realized that I was thinking only “more mature and experienced” coaches could attain the PCC signification. Now, that was me! I took the exam, and it’s official. I’m a PCC!
What pattern of thinking are you stuck in today that is holding you back from achieving your next level in life? How can you identify with the new role you’d like to experience?
