“This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival; a joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.” – Rumi
All Emotions Can Be “Good”
I love this quote because it reminds me that emotions are a good thing! One theory is that all emotions – joy, depression, even meanness – are important and can teach us something. The key is to remember that there is no need to judge your emotions or yourself…just use them as a guide in your life. Ask yourself what an emotion is teaching you. And, remember these feelings will ALL pass – the pleasant ones and the not so pleasant ones:-) For a simple four step process to feel your feelings, read this free guide.
I also love using the tool below–Emotional Guidance Scale–where authors Esther and Abraham Hicks explain a scale of our feelings and emotions. These emotions are in order from our highest energy feelings to our lowest. The scale includes 22 of the most common emotions. When using this scale, I keep in mind the principles below and ask myself “what is one thing I can think or believe differently to get me to a higher feeling emotion?” This process might get you only one or two emotions higher. But, releasing the lower energy emotion will feel good. Try it!
Principles
• Every emotion is valid, useful, and could be used to help us learn something.
• Feel your feelings and process your emotions. The problem is when we extend that emotion in to a mood.
• Emotions are predispositions to actions. With a new emotion comes new ways to behave, act, and even think.
